People of the 20th Century: Photographs from Classic Portrait Photography of German Life between the 1910s and 1940s
In 1911, Sander began the first portrait series for his work, People of the 20th Century . In the early 1920s, he came into contact with the Cologne Progressives , a radical group of artists with ties to the labor movement who, as Wieland Schmied put it, “sought to combine Constructivism and Objectivity, geometry and object, the general and the particular, avant-garde conviction and political commitment, and perhaps came closest to the future orientation of New Objectivity […].” In 1927, Sander traveled through Sardinia with the writer Ludwig Mathar for three months, taking around 500 photographs. A planned travel book, however, was never completed.
